Memorial Day Flags: A Family Tradition

Posted on May 27, 2011 at 9:41 PM

The Riley family started putting flags on the graves of service men and women in the Woodcock Valley many years ago.  The tradition first started with John Wilmer Riley (1889-1973), and has been passed down to his son John Thomas, his grandson Kenneth Allen, and now his great-grandson Carson Fisher Riley.  I, of course, help too!

The Riley family has been responsible for placing new flags on the following cemeteries:

The new flags are placed prior to Memorial Day, and all of the service markers are checked to ensure they are in good condition.  If you are interested in learning more about the kinds of service markers that can be seen in local cemeteries, check out the photos that Ellis Michaels has taken as he has photographed many cemeteries. You can view various kinds of service markers by clicking on the link.

We keep a list of all of the service men and women who are buried in the above cemeteries, and check each name off as a new flag is put in place.  You can view the list by clicking on the link above.

This year, I took my camera along and got some photos of various buildings and tombstones along our route.  I was able to photograph almost all of the stones in the Shultz Cemetery.  You can view the photos in the Other Families photo album or by clicking on the cemetery link and then clicking on the individual names.  I already have plans for what photos I need to take next year!

And of course, no Memorial Day flag placing event goes by at the Old Stone Church Cemetery, that I do not stop and ask James K. Isett if he would like to tell me who his father was!

Happy Memorial Day!
