Several days ago, I added a new page to the website about the Bowers School in Penn Township. This school is located next to the Lutheran church, now known as the Old Stone Church.
I am a Kindergarten teacher, and my school is closing. We are all packing up and preparing to move to another school. Our 4th/5th grade teacher unearthed a packet of info about the Bowers School. Knowing my passion for local history and genealogy, she rushed it to me to make a copy. I have included the information from the packet on the Bowers School page.
It is unknown exactly when the Bowers School was built, but it is believed to have been erected sometime after 1883. It is believed that it replaced a nearby log school known as the Garner School. The school was in operation until 1950, when students were bussed to the Woodcock Valley School.
I provided a list of known teachers. One of the teachers who worked in the area, including the Bowers School, was Chloe Garner.
This photo of Chloe Garner was taken in 1931 when she was working at the Upper Corner School on Piney Ridge. Elva Chloe Garner [1900-1988] was the daughter of Edmund P. Garner and Mary Elizabeth Anderson. Chloe married Robert Grubb in 1938.
I also included information on the Schools page about students who went to the various one room schools in Penn Township. This is still a work in progress, but you can find the year, name of the school, student names, and their parents.
You can see more names by clicking on the link for Penn Township School Attendance. Again, this is a work in progress, and as time permits, I will add more years and more names.
A while back, I helped the Huntingdon County Historical Society compile information on the one room school houses of Lincoln and Hopewell Townships. I went a step further and also included Penn Township and Marklesburg Borough for my own research pleasure. I was not very successful on gathering information. I did include photos of the existing school houses, but I must not have kept copies of the photos. You can access the information I put together on one room schools by clicking on the link.
If you have more information on a one room school, I would be happy to create more pages for individual schools that were located in the Woodcock Valley!
