I've been cursed with family lines that do not hold on to old photographs or share them or something! I think part of the problem may be that on my father's side all of the lines are so large, and my ancestors were always on the youngest end of the chains. I assume maybe the older children got the treasured photos. Or maybe there were just so many people that they got scattered to the wind. I treasure the few I have that my aunt allowed me to borrow and scan.
On my mom's side of the family, she came from a long line of only children, so I don't know what happened to her inheritance of family photos! She had them back for a few generations, but then nothing. When you go back far enough, there were large lines. The photos must have went to those first-born kids way back.
I was once at a family reunion when a man came walking in with an old oval framed photo. He asked if anyone could help him with who the people in the photo were. When I picked my jaw up off the sidewalk, I kindly explained who was in the photo he was holding. This antique had just been collecting dust in his attic without him knowing who he was residing with. Amazing!
Ralph Garner just commented on the site about the mistreatment of family photos in an antique shop that he visited, and I have to agree with him - it is disgraceful. It makes me very sad when I am at an estate auction and family photos and Bibles are being sold. Wasn't there one family member left who would have cherished them?
Where have all of the old family photos gone? Do they have a cherished place with you, or are they lost forever? If you know where they are, please share them with us!
