Camp S-60, Whipple Place (Owl's Gap) Civilian Conservation Corps Camp

Posted on April 1, 2012 at 11:45 PM

I was recently contacted by Frank Kroboth.  His wife's grandfather, Robert Bealer, was one of the leaders at the Owl's Gap camp in 1934-1935.  The camp was officially known as Camp S-60, Whipple Place, but it was more commonly known as the Owl's Gap Camp.  It was located in Neff's Mills in Huntingdon County, PA.  Mr. Bealer passed down his memorabilia from his Civilian Conservation Corps days.  Frank Kroboth was so kind to share some of the photos and a camp roster.

Mr. Bealer is the man circled in the photograph.  This photo shows the overhead and rated men. For a list of the names, click on the photo in the Civilian Conservation Corps photo album.

Frank Kroboth shared more photos which can be viewed in the Civilian Conservation Corps photo album, but one of great importance is a 1935 roster from the Volume 1 No. 9 December 1935 edition of the Owl's Gap Hoot N Howl, the camp newsletter.

I have added all of the names from this roster and the backs of the photos that Frank Kroboth submitted to the Civilian Conservation Corps Workers roster.  Please visit the roster to see the names above and others that have been submitted since the last update.

I actually received Frank Kroboth's message this week, and another request from a person looking for information on his ancestor who served with the CCC in New Mexico.  There seems to be so few records on-line about the Civilian Conservation Corps.  So, I have started a Facebook page called Civilian Conservation Corps Reunion to try and help people connect with their family members who served in the CCC from across the US.  I want to provide a place where family members can share their photos and rosters such as the one Frank Kroboth shared.  I hope to have lists for each state where we can add names of family members who served in the CCC.  If you have an interest in the Civilian Conservation Corps, please visit the new Facebook page at

https://www.facebook.com/CCCReunion

Please consider adding your CCC photos, memorabilia, and family members names.
