Recipes of Old

A little over a year ago, my dad had a public auction to liquidate some of the extra stuff he had accumulated.  We moved from Altoona to Huntingdon County in 1988.  The second story of his garage was full of unpacked boxes from our move.  I guess you could say we had a "garage sale" of epic proportions that Saturday in April 2010.  My mom had been a crafter, sewer, and leather worker; she was all about crafty.  At the sale, my dad sold all of her fabrics and supplies.  A friend of mine bought a box of fabric for her sisters, who are quilters.  In the box of fabric, they found a very old recipe box.  Knowing my sentimental value for stuff like that, my friend returned it to me as a gift on my first Mother's Day!  I have no idea how the recipe box got packed in a box of scrap fabric, but I am so thankful she returned it to me.  I'm not really sure who the recipe box belonged to, but I'm fairly certain it was either my grandmother, Lorma Evelyn (Creighton) Kinch (1916-1981) or my great-grandmother, Mary Katherine (Watson) Creighton (1887-1937).  Another possible owner would be my other great-grandmother, Elva Jane (Cole) Kinch (1893-1951). 

 

I thought it would be fun to share some of these recipes from time to time.  So, here is the first recipe from the old box:

 

 

The recipe says:

 

Fudge (Edith)

 

  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 2 tb. cocoa
  • 3 tb. syrup
  • pinch of salt
  • piece of butter
  • 1 tb. vanilla
  • add hypolite to make light and smooth

 

Sit in a pan of cold water to prevent turning to sugar.  Cook 3 min. after it begins to boil.

 

Good luck with the recipe!  It's not very similar to what I'm used to.  What is hypolite?  Is it still made?  Is there a modern day equivalent?  I'm assuming that this recipe was from my great-aunt, Edith Pearl (Cole) Waite (1885-1973).
