H. Clair Colbert Memoirs

Posted on April 9, 2011 at 4:42 PM

In this blog entry, I'm jumping from the Woodcock Valley, across the old river, to the Trough Creek Valley area of Huntingdon County to look at the Saylor, Pheasant, Curfman, and Stever families.

I recently purchased a book on e-bay entitled Memoirs of H. Clair Colbert by H. Clair Colbert, dated 1997.

Clair Colbert was born in Altoona, Blair County, Pennsylvania in 1910.  His parents were David Franklin Colbert and Mildred Iva Saylor.  Both of his parents died in 1918; his father from complications of a work accident with the PRR, and his mother from influenza.  Clair and his siblings were divided between family members and foster families.  Clair first stayed with his grandparents, Samuel and Ida (Pheasant) Saylor, who lived in Williamsburg, Blair County, PA.  He then went to live with his aunt and uncle, Amy (Pheasant) and Harry Greenland in the Trough Creek Valley.  They were also foster parents to their neice, Myrtle Curfman.

In 1935, H. Clair Colbert married Evadene G. Stever, a daughter of John Leslie Stever and Odessa Roland.  The Colberts made their home in the Trough Creek Valley, eventually settling on the farm that had been owned by Clair's aunt and uncle.  Evadene died in 1987 and Clair in 2003.  You can read Clair's obituary by clicking on the link.

Clair's memoirs tell about his family history and his spiritual journey.  It amazes me at the detailed information he included in his book about his family.  It is obvious that he had never researched his family history, but he still provided all of the pieces future researchers would be interested in.

Clair did speculate that his grandfather was probably Jordan M. Colbert.  However, using information he provided and census records, I have proven this thought to be incorrect.  His grandfather was actually Robert Colbert, who was married to Emiline (1857-1933).  Robert was born about 1853 in Virginia and died between 1890 and 1900.  All of the other information Clair provided in the book is precise.

I have included photos of the Colbert, Stever, Saylor, Curfman, and Pheasant families in the Other Families photo album.  The photos are all labeled with names and pertinent information that Clair provided in the book.

If you are related to any of these people, I would be happy to provide you with any additional information from the book.
